COMING LAKEWOOD UCC EVENTS

COMMUNITY EVENTS

SUN, DEC 3 THIS SUNDAY: This Communion Sunday will mark the beginning of the Advent contemplative services. The communion offering goes to the Special Needs Fund which is used to help people in our community with basic necessities such as food, rent, utilities, and prescription medication costs. Please be generous as you are able.
SUNDAYS IN ADVENT: “I’m so busy!” “I don’t have time.” “I’m so behind on all I have to do!” It must be the holiday season! Resist! Come to church each Sunday in December for, well, some peace and quiet. The services will be contemplative in style offering inspiration as well as time and space for reflection. Pause. Be. Renew. Reconnect with yourself, with God, and with others who are also seeking to stay centered in love.

The theme for the season is “Be Born in Us Today.” The candles of the Advent wreath will be lit each week to mark the weeks until the celebration of the birth of Christ. It’s a time to remember all we are being given! You are being given time. Choose to spend some of it in church. Church school and nursery care is provided for children.

10:15 Singing of favorite songs of the season
10:30 Contemplative worship.

SUN, DEC 3 HANGING THE GREENS: Help transform the sanctuary for the holy season celebrating the birth of Jesus. Decorating the church will take place Sunday Dec 3rd following morning worship. Plan to be part of this time of fellowship and fun!
DAILY DEVOTIONS: “Be Born in Us Today” is the theme for the daily devotions that will be posted on the church website and emailed to church family & friends each day. These daily reminders of the “reason for the season” provide touchstones on the journey of preparation to receive the incarnation of Divine Love. Each day brings a new barrage of information & news – much of it disturbing and distressing. Stay grounded in the Love that is at the heart of creation and fully expressed in the life of Jesus. This is the love seeking to be born in us.

Another daily devotion option is an Advent Book of Daily Devotions by the Still Speaking Writers of the United Church of Christ.  It is available in a Kindle version from https://www.uccresources.com/products/watch-2017-advent-devotional-the-stillspeaking-writers-group?variant=48339482831
SONGS OF THE SEASON: The spirit of this special season is beautifully expressed in carols and songs. Come early on Sundays in Advent to enjoy singing favorite songs of the season led by Hilton Jones. Sunday Dec 3, 10, 17 & 24. at 10:15 am in the sanctuary.
REMEMBERING LOVED ONES AT CHRISTMAS: This year to honor loved ones and friends, you are invited to order a special handmade ornament that will grace the Christmas tree at church through Christmas Eve. Those who order ornaments may take them after the service on Christmas Eve. Order forms are available at church and on the church website. You are invited to include a donation with your order. If you would like to help make the ornaments, please contact Yoko Nogami.
IN HONOR OF JESUS A HOMELESS REFUGEE & IMMIGRANT: Life is very difficult for immigrants and refugees in the US today. Locally, Gulfcoast Legal Services helps to provide legal help to those who are new to the United States. LUCC has been looking for ways to support immigrants and refugees in our area. As a special opportunity for giving, in celebration of gratitude and abundance the Christmas offering at Lakewood will be donated to Gulfcoast Legal Services. Jena Blair, part of the LUCC church family, works as a lawyer at Gulfcoast. Giving cans are available at church for your Christmas offering. Collect throughout the month and bring your offering can to church on Christmas Eve.
We are told stories of Jesus’ family migrating to Bethlehem and immigrating to Egypt where they lived as refugees fleeing the threat of death. So many people are in similar circumstances today. We help them in honor of Jesus.
LUMEN CHRISTI: Advent is the season of preparing to receive the gift of the light of Christ. It is a season in which to get ready for the blaze of Divine Love in the world and in our lives.

Lumen Christi means light of Christ. This Advent season, a candle with a brief prayer liturgy will circulate in the LUCC church family. A sign-up sheet will be available on Sunday. Select a date that you would like to host the Lumen Christi. Make arrangements to receive it from whoever had it the day before you. The day you have it, pause, perhaps at dinner time. Display the candle, light it and offer the prayers included. Then see that it gets to the next person on the list. This is a beautiful way to engage in welcoming the light of Christ. The Lumen Christi will begin its journey at church on Sunday, December 3rd and will return to church for the Christmas Eve service. Make sure to sign up and take a turn celebrating the coming of the light of Christ.

CHRISTMAS CARDS: Wally has holiday and Christmas cards featuring his artwork, as well as other holiday cards and holiday items. Items and cards available on a love offering basis. The proceeds will be donated to Covenant House Florida. Thank you, Wally!
TUE, DEC 5, 12 & 19 GUIDED LABYRINTH WALKS: The labyrinth provides a tool for walking meditation and prayer. Another straw labyrinth is being created on the church grounds. During Advent, guided labyrinth walks will be offered to help deepen your preparation to incarnate Divine Love in the world today. All are welcome! Tuesdays Dec 5, 12 and 19 at 6pm at the church.
SAT, DEC 9 PARENTS AFTERNOON OUT: LUCC will host a free afternoon of peace-themed indoor and outdoor activities for kids on Saturday, December 9th from noon to 4. Free babysitting while you prepare for the holidays (or maybe take a break from all the preparations). Staffed by licensed day care workers and Pinellas County teachers. In order to be inclusive of all faith traditions, there will be no religious instruction. (If you are interested in this for your children, there is church school during the school year Sunday mornings at 10:30.) Bring your own snacks. For more information call (727) 867-7961 or email.
