Weekly Update 3/25

WHAT IS GOING ON AT CHURCH –

EV Charging Station

A new electrical vehicle charging station has been installed on the north side of the church building. This project was done in partnership with Duke Energy. Several people from the congregation were directly involved in assisting with the installation. Many thanks to Claire Stiles, Earl Waters, Bert Lee, and Jeff Wells.

Labyrinth Walks are being held as scheduled on Wednesday mornings at 9:00 through Lent. The dates are April 1st, and 8th. There will also be guided labyrinth walks on Good Friday at noon and Easter Sunday at 7:00 a.m. We feel given current information and restrictions that it is safe to hold this activity. It involves less than 10 people, it is outside, and the people can be at least 6 feet apart. Bring your own chair if you wish.

Corona Sabbath Posts

Each Friday, the church will post a devotional with readings, video from Kim, and music from Hilton. You are invited to access these at the website and observe the sabbath according to your schedule over the weekend. There will be a new one posted each week.

Corona Prayer

In response to the COVID-19 virus, the congregation is recommending that everyone in the church family pause at 9:00 a.m. each day, light a candle if you can (or put on the light on your cell phone. . .), and offer the prayer which follows.  Doing this together in spirit will help us to feel connected and bonded as a congregation.  You are encouraged to respond with a comment as part of our connecting as a church family and beyond.    

This devotion is based on the mission statement of Lakewood United Church of Christ.

In this time of global pandemic we realize that around the world people are facing the same threat.  We are in solidarity as a species with common vulnerability.  We are all at risk and we are all needed to cooperate in our response. 

May we celebrate the presence and power of God in our lives and in our world –

We see the presence of Infinite Love the world over as people comply with drastic restrictions for the good of family, neighbors, friends, strangers, and even enemies.  We give thanks for the sacrifice of so many especially in the medical science and healthcare professions.  We are grateful for the generosity of compassion and care that we see around us. 

May we offer the hospitality and inclusive love of Christ to all people –

In this time of social distancing, isolation, and quarantine may we reach out in love especially to those who feel lost, alone, and forgotten. 

May we be mindful of the hardship this situation creates for children and families as well as elders.

May we extend kindness and compassion to those we encounter and may we convey support to our leaders, healthcare workers, and all those working to sustain society.

May we work for God’s peace and justice throughout Creation –

We realize that the restrictions and limitations forced upon us by this threat hit some people much harder than others.  Disparities in access to healthcare, technology, and financial resources magnify the suffering facing humanity at this time.  May we be aware and responsive to the needs of others as we are able.

We are also mindful that this time of reduced human activity is providing respite and renewal for the natural world which sustains us.

May this experience of unprecedented global threat strengthen the bonds of the web of life and deepen our connection to Infinite Love.  Amen.

While we are to maintain our physical distance, you are encouraged to reach out to someone from the church family at least once a week – a phone call, an email, a handwritten note – whatever works best for you. Please be in contact with one another.

In addition, please be in contact with people beyond the church family – friends, neighbors, public officials, health care workers – offering a word of gratitude or support or encouragement. These are hard times for many people. And many feel extremely isolated. So, reach out, but don’t touch!

A New Church Directory

To facilitate our efforts to be in contact, an updated church directory is being mailed to church members. If you would like a copy and do not receive one in the next week or so, please contact the Church Office.

Increased Spiritual Support

The church will be offering regular emails and posts offered as spiritual support for the congregation and beyond in these difficult days. If there is something you would like the church to share, please send it to the Church Office. Thank you!

Sundays. . .

On Sundays, Rev. Wells will be at church from 10:30-11:30. The peace candle will be lit and prayers will be offered. You are welcome to stop by to pray or meditate. The labyrinth is also available. This is a symbolic witness that the church is still here, is still serving, is still active, is still shining light – even in these drastically changed circumstances.

Help Offered

Several people from the congregation have offered to help others as needed. If you need something from the grocery store or help with an errand or some other kind of assistance, please contact the Church Office. There are those who are ready and willing.

Tithes and Offerings

While the nature of the ministry of the church is adapting to these pandemic circumstances, there are still staff to support and facilities and grounds to be maintained. So, please continue your financial support of the church and please increase that support as you are able. It is unlikely that the adult day care will be opening any time soon, so additional resources are needed to maintain the ministry of the church which is so very much needed in these uncertain times.

You may donate through Pay Pal at the Church website. The Church is also creating a Venmo account to receive any donations. You are welcome to send in checks or arrange electronic payment through your financial institution.

New Cleaning Routines

The church custodian, Tony Rogers, is being sure to thoroughly sanitize the building including door handles, faucets, etc. We are grateful for this increased effort.

Operation Attack: Operation Attack is very much in need of clothes for men, boys, and girls as well as diapers and peanut butter and canned fruit. Donations may be placed in the shopping cart in the entryway to the sanctuary. Volunteer dates are April 13 and May 11. They also need people to help on the first three Tuesdays of the month from 9:30-noon.

Operation Attack is an ecumenical effort serving families with children located at Lakeview Presbyterian Church, 1310 22nd. Ave. S., St. Petersburg. LUCC was a founding member of Operation Attack in the 1960’s!

Maximo Elementary

The church has reached out to Maximo Elementary School to see what can be done to help during this hiatus in regular instruction. No school means no food for breakfast or lunch for many students. We are looking into how we can help.

In Memoriam: Former LUCC member Mattie Lesueur died March 5 at her home in St. Petersburg.  She was a member of Traveler’s Rest Baptist Church.

Maximo Report: LUCC delivered 25 Sack Packs and 25 Activity Packs to Maximo Elementary Tuesday. Olivia and Claudia did their shopping magic in 1 hour and then put all the packs together.  I delivered them to Ms. Jones at Maximo Elementary. Thanks everyone for another awesome ministry to benefit  homeless children at Maximo Elementary.  A total of $978 was donated for this project. Weekly Update July 31

This Sunday: This Summer is a chance to look back at some of the most well-known stories of the Bible. This week focuses on the story of Jesus turning water into wine in the gospel of John chapter 2. Jan Trebesch will be playing for the service while Hilton Jones is away. There will be special music offered by Randy Wilson on the dulcimer.

Communion: August 4 is a Communion Sunday. All are welcome to participate, children at the discretion of the adults who bring them. The communion offering goes to the Special Needs Fund which is used to help people in our community and the congregation with basic necessities such as food, rent, utilities, and prescription medication costs. In recent days the communion offering has assisted those in the congregation and the community with: rent, a bus pass, a car repair. Thanks to Janet Blair-Andrews for preparing communion.

Back to School Sunday Ahead: Sunday August 11 will be a chance to wish LUCC teachers and students well as the new school year begins. There will be a special Fellowship Hour after church that week. Don’t miss it!

Lights of Liberty: Action teams were formed to represent the lanes (areas) that will work toward ending immigrant detention.  Those lanes are: Direct Action, Legislative Accountability, Homestead Witnessing, Research Complicit Companies, Flores Agreement, Immigration Protection. The six action teams met briefly to discuss methods and action approaches for their groups. The take-home word was, Action! If you are interested in more information about the Coalition, please see Lucille Ruga or Patti Cooksey.  The next meeting is scheduled for August 6th.

Rocking Chair: The church would like a rocking chair for the new family friendly area of the sanctuary.  If you have one to donate, please contact the church office. 727-867-7961 or lakewooducc@gmail.com. Many thanks!

Lunch Bunch: The Lunch Bunch is going to resume going out to lunch after church on Sundays.  This is an informal gathering of whoever would like to go out to lunch together after church on Sunday.  There will be an announcement each week about the plans for that day.  Many thanks to Wally Leblanc for getting this going again!

Come Out St. Pete: This street festival and parade will be taking place Oct. 5 on Central Ave. between 22 and 31st Sts.  The church is considering have a booth at the event.  Volunteers are needed to help.  Please speak with Rev. Wells or one of the advisors if you are willing to help staff a church booth that day.  

Theological Orientation Discussions: These discussions were requested as part of reviewing the church mission statement and possibly creating a new mission statement. Upcoming dates for gatherings are: August 7, 14, 21, and 28. That will conclude the series. All are welcome to participate!

Concert and Old-Time Music Workshop Evan Kinney with Van Burchfield, Old-Time Music Workshop. As a duo, Evan and Van perform southern breakdowns, rags and novelty songs from the turn of the 20th century. The concert and workshop will be held here at Lakewood United Church of Christ August 17th. The workshop is 4-6pm and the concert at 7pm. The suggested donation for the workshop is $20 and the suggested donation for the concert is $20. Or come to both for a suggested donation of $30. All of the proceeds are given to the musicians. Ministry with Children and Youth:  The church is working on putting a children’s ministry in place for the rest of the year.  Many thanks to Marg Radens, Patti Cooksey, Emily Bell, Olivia Gibson, and Claudia Rodriguez for working on this! The next meeting will be Tuesday Aug. 6 at 9:30 a.m. This is the group responsible for the new family friendly seating area in the sanctuary!

What’s Cookin’?: Have you been needing an excuse to have a good time? Are you interested in stirring up new friendships? Do you like to eat? Then SIGN UP for What’s Cooking! Small, intimate groups that dine together monthly for 4 months for the purpose of fostering friendship among the entire LUCC community. Weekly Update 6.5.19

This Sunday:  This Sunday is Pentecost.  It is the holy day celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit to the gathered disciples forming the faith community we have come to know as the church.  The liturgical color is RED so you are encouraged to wear red!

Graduation Reception on Sunday:  On Sunday June 9, the Andrews-Blair family and the Coughenour-Gibson family, will host a cake and coffee reception celebrating the graduations of Zoe Blair-Andrews from USF and Olivia Gibson from Piedmont College.  The celebration will take place following worship in the Fellowship Hall.

Creation Justice:  The Creation Justice Task Force will meet on Friday June 7 at 10:30 a.m. in the church library.  One thing on the agenda will be to compare the solar bids for installing solar power on the church roof.  Everyone who is interested is welcome!

Summer Sundays Ahead:  Summer Sundays begin Sunday June 16, Father’s Day!  The services will be more informal.  Themes will focus on favorite Bible stories that are referenced in literature, art, and cultural discourse.  The themes come from a book by former Eckerd professor, Tim Beal, called Biblical Literacy.  This is a very good opportunity for young people of the church to become acquainted with commonly referenced Bible stories.  May all increase their biblical literacy this summer!

Next Sunday: Rev. Victoria Long will be preaching and Genie Terrell will be back offering the ministry of music. Rev. Wells returns to church June 30.

PRIDE! The fifth annual St. Petersburg Interfaith Pride Worship Service will be held June 20 from 6:00 pm – 9:00 p.m. The event will begin at Metro Center 3251 3rd Ave. N. at 6:00 with a walking processional to King of Peace Metropolitan Community Church at 3150 5th Ave. N. where the service will begin at 7:00 p.m. The St. Petersburg Pride Festival will be held Sunday, June 23, 2019 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. between 22nd and 28th Streets on Central Avenue. LUCC member Wally LeBlanc will have a booth at the festival offering his artwork, photo prints, and other creations. Make sure to visit Wally when you go to the Festival! Children’s Ministry:  The church is putting in place a children’s ministry for the rest of the year. If you are interested in being part of this effort, please speak with Kim Wells or one of the advisors. Many thanks!

Property West of the Church:  Boley Centers is planning to buy the property to the west of the church and put in a 20 apartment complex for people who would otherwise be homeless.  Church leaders have met with Boley staff.  The church is very supportive of this project.  You can read about it in an article in the Tampa Bay Times last Friday:  Tampa Bay Times . You are encouraged to write letters to the City Council in support of the Boley project.  For more information, contact Earl Waters (Earl’s email).

New Church Administrator:  A new church administrator has been hired to staff the church office Tuesdays-Fridays 9:30 to noon.  Gabi Paxton will begin working on Tuesday July 2.  Please call, email, or stop by to introduce yourself to Gabi and welcome her to the church when she begins.

Weekly Update 5.29.19

This Sunday:  The Constitution promises life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  But what about joy?  Jesus promises abundant joy.  We’ll think about what that means on Sunday.  This Sunday is a Communion Sunday.

LUCC Concert Series: celebrating Old Time, Blues, Blue Grass, Folk & Country music. Friday, May 31 – Rebecca Zapen & Jeremy Douglass.

Rebecca being the versatile vocalist and violinist has released 4 albums. Award-winning albums Nest and Japanese Bathhouse feature her eclectic folk-pop songwriting; Hummingbird and ZapStar feature jazz standards and bossa nova, as well as several original compositions. Awards and accolades include: Florida Album of the Year 2011 forNest, which debuted at #12 on the Folk DJ charts; Jacksonville’s Musician of the Year 2008; and Best Cabaret Album & Best Cabaret Song in Just Plain Folks Awards 2009 for Japanese Bathhouse. Zapen’s original songs appeared in a national promotion for Crocs Shoes. She placed 2nd in the Bushman World Ukulele Video Contest, and she was a Finalist in the 2007 DiscMakers’ Independent Music World Series. My Old Kentucky Blog says of Zapen’s newest release Nest: “There’s a sense of arcane, jazzy pop; fifties romanticism, classical music, and Yiddish and other folk traditions; a bowl of ingredients from which Zapen intuitively ladles the right elements for her evocative compositions…Nest is something of a miracle.”

An award-winning composer, she earned the Silver Medal of Excellence for Best Use of Music in a Short Film at the 2008 Park City Film Music Festival. Her original songs appear in Look Both Ways, which won for Best Music in the 2009 San Francisco Seven Day Film Festival. Her music has been featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered: Open Mic. In addition to performing extensively in Florida and touring throughout the United States, playing at venues such as The Bitter End (NYC), Genghis Cohen (L.A.), and Katerina’s (Chicago), she has also delighted audiences abroad at venues such as Les Temps Modernes (Switzerland), Le Caveau des Oubliettes (France), and Paganini Auditorium (Italy). A native of Jacksonville, Florida, she now calls St. Petersburg home, where she lives with her husband, pianist and recording engineer Jeremy Douglass, and their little boy.

In Memoriam:  Willy Zessoules, a friend of the congregation, died recently.  She was living at Westminster Suncoast.  Condolences are expressed to her family and friends.  A memorial service for Willy will be held at LUCC on Monday June 3 at 4:00 p.m.

Pentecost is Coming:  That is the Sunday that the start of the church is celebrated.  The story involves flames and lots of languages.  The liturgical color for the day is red so you are encouraged to wear red on Sunday June 9.

Graduation Reception Ahead:  On Sunday June 9, the Andrews-Blair family and the Coughenour-Gibson family, will host a cake and coffee reception celebrating the graduations of Zoe Blair-Andrews from USF and Olivia Gibson from Piedmont College.  The celebration will take place following worship in the Fellowship Hall.

Summer Sundays Ahead:  Summer Sundays begin Sunday June 16, Father’s Day!  The services will be more informal.  Themes will focus on favorite Bible stories that are referenced in literature, art, and cultural discourse.  The themes come from a book by former Eckerd professor, Tim Beal, called Biblical Literacy.  This is a very good opportunity for young people of the church to become acquainted with commonly referenced Bible stories.  May all increase their biblical literacy this summer!

Children’s Ministry:  The church is putting in place a children’s ministry for the rest of the year. If you are interested in being part of this effort, please speak with Kim Wells or one of the advisors. Many thanks!

Property West of the Church:  Boley Centers is planning to buy the property to the west of the church and put in a 20 apartment complex for people who would otherwise be homeless.  Church leaders have met with Boley staff.  The church is very supportive of this project.  You can read about it in an article in the Tampa Bay Times last Friday:  Tampa Bay Times

Operation Attack: Operation Attack is very much in need of clothes for men, boys, and girls as well as diapers and peanut butter and canned fruit.  All volunteers are welcome! Operation Attack is an ecumenical effort serving families with children located a Lakeview Presbyterian Church, 1310 22nd. Ave. S., St. Petersburg. LUCC was a founding member of Operation Attack in the 1960’s!
