Danielle Hintz, Jeff Wells, and Kim Wells were part of the George Floyd vigil on Friday. Several cars beeped in support.
A woman stopped to talk with the group. It turns out she is the one who suggested the idea of doing the vigil to the City. She suggested having a time of remembrance each night for 8 nights at 8:00 for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.
She was very pleased to see us and to know that the church is participating in this gesture of solidarity.
Patti Cooksey, Victoria Long, Gary Long, and Jeff Wells continued the vigil on night 3. There were more honks and expressions of support from passersby than on previous night.
The vigil continues through Tuesday June 9. All are welcome. Come to the church before 8. We’ll head out to the sign and kneel, with a light, at 8:00 for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.
On the second night of solidarity for George Floyd and others, Patti Cooksey, Jeff Wells, and Kim Wells knelt in front of the church sign for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. It was a bit drippy but our lights were shining and several cars beeped their horns in support. One car pulled up to the curb and the driver told us he had made a u-turn and came back to thank us for being there.
This witness will continue each evening at 8:00 in front of the church through Tuesday, June 9. Bring a light – candle, flashlight, cell phone light – and join in. Everyone is welcome!

We just discovered that subscription emails don’t show the links to Hilton’s music in the Corona Sabbath posts using the coding we’ve always used. The website does, but the subscription emails don’t. In the future we will code the link in a different way that does show up.
These weeks when we cannot gather in person for Sunday worship, Lakewood United Church of Christ is providing brief weekly sabbath programs for you to listen to on your own or with those you live with. They will be posted on Friday so that you can schedule your sabbath time to suit your schedule and your spiritual inclinations. We hope these programs are of spiritual support to you in these difficult times.
There is a scripture reading and a brief meditation by Pastor Kim Wells followed by music offered by Music Director Hilton Kean Jones. We appreciate your suggestions and feedback.
Find a quiet place, inside or outside. Light a candle. Take a look around you. If you are inside, pay attention to the room you are in. Breathe. Life-giving breath. Be present.
Make me
a still place of light
a still place of love
of you
your light radiating
your love vibrating
your touch and your healing
far flung and near
to the myriads caught
in darkness, in sickness
in lostness, in fear
After listening to the music, you are invited to offer the following closing:
God our Mother and Father, we come to you as children. Be with us as we learn to see on another with new eyes, hear on another with new hearts, and treat one another in a new way.

Breathe. Breathe again. Feel the Spirit enlivening you. Extinguish your candle and engage whatever may come with a sense of peace and a desire to serve.
