Be Part of the Pride Parade Saturday June 27!

All are welcome to be part of the United Church of Christ contingent walking in the Pride Parade on Saturday June 27, 2015 in St. Petersburg. There will definitely be a group from Lakewood UCC. For those who prefer, LUCC will have a car in the parade and riding is also a possibility.

The assembly area for the parade is the parking lot at 31st Street and 3rd Avenue N (2 blocks north of Main Post Office).

Parking in the area is at an extreme premium, especially the later it gets in the afternoon.

Suggested time of arrival is 6 pm. Parade organizers want participants to be “ready” by 7 pm and set to begin marching by sunset/8:15 pm — Hurry up and wait!

UCC churches will assemble in spot #160, which is supposed to be right off 3rd Avenue North.

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes; perhaps sunscreen, a hat, or an umbrella (decorated?). Water is also suggested.

There will be some “props” and give-aways provided. Feel free to wear something crazy and wacky — have fun and stand out!

The route is about 15 blocks in length — that is one-way. The marching pace is on the slow side, with frequent stopping-and-going. At the end (21st and Central) you’re “free” to walk back to your car.

If the spirit moves you, you are invited to attend the first Interfaith PRIDE Worship service, which is being organized by Good Samaritan Church, a UCC/Presbyterian congregation in Pinellas Park. The service will be held on Saturday at 11 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, 401 5th Street N, across from the Coliseum near downtown St. Pete.

There will be a street fest for Pride on Sunday June 28. The UCC will have a booth there.

For additional information, please contact LUCC Pride coordinators Earl Waters (watspiv@aol.com) or Melanie Moore (msmooremsmoore@gmail.com).

The address is at: 1045 16th Street South, St. Petersburg, Florida 33705

Family Promise Open!

Family Promise is a new ministry initiative in St. Petersburg to reach out to homeless families with children. It is a model that is being used successfully nationwide. Numerous congregations and community partners have come together to begin Family Promise of Pinellas County.

The program is up and running under the leadership of Executive Director Debbie Nash supported by an able board of directors. Lakewood United Church of Christ is a support congregation working with Lakewood United Methodist Church.

Many thanks to those from the LUCC congregation who were part of the Family Promise training this week: Gary Long, Victoria Long, Denise Williams, Patti Cooksey, Ed Helm, Adrien Helm, Colleen Coughenour, Emily Bell, Bob Bell, Carol Shores, Ron Huff, Janet Blair, Jim Andrews, Deb Kenneda, Jeff Wells, Kim Wells. Earl Waters and Bill Lindsay are attending another training session. Mary Weber and Vita Uth will be helping with food preparation. In addition, many thanks to those who have been donating laundry soap, an iron, an ironing board, and other items needed for Family Promise.

There is also a need for children’s books and board games. Please bring new and used items to the church.

LUCC will be volunteering at Lakewood United Methodist Church the week of May 24. Please speak with Victoria or Gary Long for additional information.

Greetings from the New Director of Family Promise Pinellas

Dear Community Members,

I bring to you greetings today. I’m so excited about the great things that are happening at FPPC, beginning with our beautiful Day Center that has been so freshly painted on the inside by a wonderful group by the name of NOMADS, who so freely gave their time and talent to us… also donations from: computers, copiers, desks, cabinets, office supplies and so much more. It’s just so awesome!!!

As we move forward, I will do whatever it is possible to continue the success of FPPC. I feel that we all have a great support network in each group which keeps this all afloat and it will only get stronger as we continue to work together as a Family and I’m truly honored to be apart of the family.

I would like to give honor to our Beautiful Board of Directors who has been extremely instrumental in anchoring to bring FPPC into fruition. Lastly, but certainly not least because I know this could not at all be possible without the gracious yet faithful to the call and fully committed FPPC Volunteers and Coordinators. I’m so excited and I can’t wait to meet all of you. Please feel free to contact me anytime.

Blessings,

Sonya
